Pickle With Granny Smith Apples

Apples are the one fruit I maintain a distance. It's kind of complicated that I like to have a apple juice but not whole apple fruit or not even a dessert with it. So this time when I was visiting the fruit/veggie market I thought of trying this greeny "Granny Smith Apples".

I got a couple of them and started squeezing my head for recipes. The other day while I was taking to my mom she told me about my grand mom's recipe for chutney with red apples. With collaborated effort we both came out with this recipe.

Pickles generally ask for sourness in the recipe. So I choose granny smith apples for it.

Ingredients

1 Big apple/1 Cup grated apple / Diced apple
1 Tsp turmeric powder
3/4 Cup chilli powder  (Please adjust acc. to your spice levels)
1 Tsp methi seeds
Salt

Seasoning
1 Tsp mustard seeds
2 Red chilli's cut in equal size
2 Crushed garlic pods
2 Tbs oil

I used grated apple for the recipe. So here it comes...

Take grated apple in a bowl add turmeric, salt & chilli powder.Mix them slowly with a spatula.
Heat a pan with methi seeds. Once they start turn dark brown remove them & allow them to cool. Grind them to smooth powder.
Heat pan with oil add mustard and once it starts jumping add red chilli's & crushed garlic.Fry them for few seconds & switch off heat.
Mix methi powder and seasoning to the apple mixture. Keep it aside for 1hr so that all the flavors will blend well.

Note:
1. Don't grate or cut apple ahead becoz apple turns brown. So to avoid  arrange all the ingredients ahead and then come to apple.
2. Please adjust chilli powder as we eat kind of spicy food.
3. On behalf of garlic use hing or if you like add both. The flavor tastes good.

Out come: I just don't want to say that the taste was awesome but it just tastes as mango pickle. My hubby just couldn't make out the difference.

Sending this to ABC series - A for Apple event hosted by Ramya of Ramya recipes

wow, love this variety, I think it is a good way to eat granny smith, as otherwise it is sour.
